As Mukul considers his options, rumours are rife. As the TMC Disconnect Grows

Mukul M. Sangma, former Meghalaya Chief Minister and current Leader of the Opposition, is exploring new party affiliations amidst growing political speculation. Reports indicate that he is in talks with multiple political parties in the state, although the specific parties remain unidentified. The evolving situation comes after a deterioration in his relationship with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) central leadership, which has been exacerbated by TMC’s disappointing performance in the 2023 Assembly elections, where it secured only five seats. Insiders reveal that the TMC’s disengagement from the Northeast has left its state unit, including Sangma, in a precarious situation.

Earlier in the year, Mukul expressed discontent regarding how national party influences have negatively impacted regional leaders in smaller states. A recent personal issue, namely the departure of his brother Zenith M. Sangma from TMC back to Congress, is believed to have further strained Mukul’s ties with his current party. Family dynamics play a significant role in Garo Hills politics, where the Sangma family is influential. Mukul had previously left Congress under contentious circumstances in November 2021, after being sidelined by the party’s central leadership.

As Congress anticipates a revival ahead of the 2028 elections, discussions of a potential reconciliation with Mukul are circulating; however, this is complicated by his longstanding rivalry with Tura MP Saleng A. Sangma. While no formal announcements are imminent, Mukul’s future appears to have multiple potential pathways, including a return to Congress, the formation of a new regional party, or possibly taking a role within the ruling National People’s Party, although he is currently keeping his options private.
