In the Shillong Passing-Out Parade, 783 Recruits Join the Assam Regiment

The Assam Regimental Centre in Shillong on Wednesday inducted 783 recruits, including 274 Agniveers and 509 Territorial Army troops, during an Attestation Parade of the Sixth Batch of Agniveers.nMeghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma attended the Attestation Parade, which marked the culmination of 31 weeks of rigorous military training and the formal induction of young recruits into the Indian Army. The Agniveer batch comprised Naga/Kuki (08), Mizo/Lushai (02), Assamese/Kachari (20), Arunachali (18), and other recruits from across the North East Region (226), showcasing the region’s rich and diverse martial heritage.


The Chief Minister reviewed the parade, which included the march-past, presentation of Regimental Colours, trooping of the National Flag and administration of the oath. Selected parents were presented the ‘Gaurav Padak’ in recognition of their contribution to national service. In his address, Sangma praised the distinguished legacy of the Assam Regiment, noting that it was raised in Shillong on June 15, 1941 and “bravely fought against the Japanese during the Second World War,” playing a critical role in safeguarding the nation. “It is a matter of great pride that today, after successfully completing your training, you have become an integral part of the Assam Regiment and the Indian Army,” the Chief Minister said. He highlighted the future responsibilities of the recruits, observing that the newly attested soldiers would serve “in extreme weather conditions on high mountains and in remote border areas,” and urged them to uphold the Regiment’s motto, Asam Vikram.


He also reminded them of the Army’s core values—“Duty, Sacrifice, Discipline and Patriotism… the hallmarks of a true soldier.” The Chief Minister congratulated the families present and expressed confidence that the recruits were “ready for every challenge that lies ahead.” He also acknowledged the dedication of the instructional staff in shaping the trainees and conveyed his best wishes to the new soldiers and their families. The programme concluded with a slow march, the Army Song, the Regimental Song, the National Anthem, and a group photograph with the passing-out batch. A PT display and interaction with parents were also organised prior to the Chief Minister’s departure.
